Each day, Slate will offer a selection chosen by editors of photographs from the Magnum collection. The feature will also include innovative multimedia presentations of special photographic series covering a range of subjects.
Founded in 1947 by a group of photographers including Henri Cartiet-Bresson and Robert Capa, Magnum Photos is an elite cooperative made up of 60 of the most respected photojournalists in the world. Defining the second half of the 20th century, Magnum's living archive comprises a store of iconic photos, from the portrait of a young James Dean walking through Times Sqaure to the arresting image of a lone protester standing down a row of tanks in Tiananman square.
Jacob Weisberg, editor of Slate, said, "I think Magnum's own publicity materials say it best, 'When you picture an iconic image … it probably came from Magnum.' It would not be overstatement to say that the Magnum body of work is the definitive photographic historical record of the last 60 years. We're honored to be able to share the collection with our audience."
Mark Lubell, Magnum Photos New York bureau chief, said, "Since its start, Slate has established itself as the central place online to discuss the intersection of politics and culture and their impact on our lives. The photographs in the Magnum collection do much the same by showing the way we are all connected by moments both big and small. We're excited about this partnership."
The project launch is sponsored by The History Channel. "We are very pleased to have the History Channel's support for this groundbreaking initiative," said Cliff Sloan, publisher of Slate.
