Restoration Hardware started running into troubles around the time Brooks' Bobos in Paradise came out. Then, in August 2002, in a sharply observed Weekly Standard article, Brooks identified the exurban Patio Man as the new sociological icon. Patio Man, Brooks noted, shops at Home Depot. That chain's same-store sales fell 10 percent in December, and its stock is off more than a third since Brooks' article appeared.
