Chatterbox

Arts & Letters Daily, RIP

Goodbye to an old friend.

Arts & Letters Daily, the single best culture-oriented Web site, is no more. Apparently it’s gone the way of Lingua Franca, its parent. Arts & Letters Daily didn’t produce any content on its own; it simply relied on its sharp-eyed editors—Tran Huu Dung and Denis Dutton—to spot worthy material already available on the Web. This must be harder than it sounds, because no other culture portal was half as addictive, or as consistently edifying, as Arts & Letters Daily. It will be missed.

[Update, 12:45 p.m.: In an e-mail with the subject line, “Not Dead Yet,” Denis Dutton directs Chatterbox to his new Web site, Philosophy & Literature, which bears a strong resemblance to Arts & Letters Daily. Best of luck to it.]
