Actually, I can imagine a West Bank military incursion being good for Israel in the long run if its purpose were to set the stage for serious peace negotiations. After all, the incursion could a) drive home to the Palestinians the long-term costs of not accepting a less-than-perfect two-state deal; b) temporarily dampen Palestinian terrorism, thus allowing negotiations to take place in something other than an environment of nonstop horror. However, paving the way for serious peace negotiations definitely isn't what Sharon had in mind when he launched the incursion. Besides, when I say I oppose Sharon's policies, I'm not just talking about the incursion. I'm including the many things Sharon has done—including a long-standing policy of targeted assassinations, complete with collateral damage—that so aggravated terrorism as to make the incursion seem necessary to Israelis.
