This month's controversy over the Olympic pairs figure-skating put the spotlight on the sport's judging system, but it wasn't the first time. After the so-called "Great Flip-Flop" at the 1997 European Championships, the International Skating Union supposedly improved its judging system. But Slate's Steven E. Landsburg explained how it wasn't any better: There's no way to design a truly fair and accurate judging system, unless you have only one judge—or an infinite number.
