Early 1998 Gifts

130. PETER KARMANOS Jr. and DEBRA GLENDENING-KARMANOS--$2 million to GRADY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL (Delaware, Ohio), from the former owner of the Hartford Whalers and his wife. The gift was made in memory of Marjorie Anne "Midge" Glendening, Debra Karmanos' mother, who spent time in the hospital's emergency room and intensive-care unit before her death in 1996.

130. BANKS D. KERR--$2 million to the UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL.

130. ELAINE D. KLIEGER--$2 million to the MEDICAL COLLEGE OF WISCONSIN for a chair in obstetrics and gynecology and another in ophthalmology. Klieger's late husband, Jack, was an obstetrician and gynecologist.

130. DENNIS and CARLOTTA PAWLEY--$2 million to OAKLAND UNIVERSITY (Mich.) from the executive vice president of manufacturing for Chrysler Corp. and his wife.

130. FRED L. and MYRTLE R. PROCTOR--$2 million to GREENSBORO COLLEGE (N.C.) for programs in teacher education.

130. JON and MARY SHIRLEY--$2 million to BELLEVUE ART MUSEUM (Wash.) from the former Microsoft president and his wife. The gift will pay for the purchase of a half-acre site directly across the street from the museum's current location, where it plans to build a new, $20-million, three-story art center with studio space, classrooms, and creative exhibits. Jon Shirley said it was the museum's mission of hands-on arts education at the new building that persuaded them to make the donation.

130. SHIRLEY SHLAFER--$2 million to the DETROIT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.

130. HAROLD SHORT--$2 million to COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY to expand the engineering building, renovate a laboratory, and create an endowed chair. This is the largest single donation made by an individual to the university. Short is a 1940 graduate.
