51. HAROLD McMASTER, HELEN McMASTER, and PHILIP GARDNER--$1.98 million to the UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO (Ohio) for a professorship in orthopedic biomedical engineering. McMaster, a resident of Perrysburg (Ohio), is chairman of the board of Solar Cells, a company that develops alternative energy products. Gardner is president of Findlay Industries.

52. ERNEST MARIO and MILDRED MARIO--$1.9 million to DUKE UNIVERSITY (N.C.) from the CEO of Alza, a therapeutic drug-delivery-systems company, to fund the Levine Science Research Center and for an endowed chair at the business school.

53. THE GREENSPUN FAMILY--$1.7 million to the UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA AT LAS VEGAS and its College of Urban Affairs for scholarships and professorships. The gift brings to $5 million the total that the family has given the university. The Greenspuns own the Las Vegas Sun, a daily newspaper.

54. JERRY REINSDORF and WILLIAM WIRTZ--nearly $1.6 million from the owners of Chicago's new United Center to MALCOLM X COLLEGE in Chicago. The gift, the largest financial commitment from a private donor in the school's 85-year history, was announced at a news conference in which Chicago Bulls chairman Reinsdorf and Chicago Blackhawks owner and president William Wirtz endorsed a poster-sized check for $1,585,000. The money donated to the school, one of the seven city colleges of Chicago, will be used to support academic and athletic programs. Jerry Reinsdorf is president, donor, and trustee of JMR Charities Inc.

55. MAJOR-GEN. RAYMOND E. MASON and MARGARET MASON--more than $1.6 million to OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY as part of the university's "Affirm Thy Friendship" campaign. The gift was made through the couple's Raymond E. Mason Foundation, and is designated to three areas: the Major-Gen. Raymond E. Mason Jr. Endowed Professorship in Military History, the Raymond E. Mason Sr. Endowed Professorship in Transportation and Logistics in the Fisher College of Business, and the building campaign at the Fisher College.

56. JOHN PAPPAJOHN and MARY PAPPAJOHN--$1.5 million to the UNIVERSITY OF IOWA, to expand its Institute for Entrepreneurial Management, from the president of Equity Dynamics, a Des Moines venture-capital company, and his wife. The gift is the couple's fourth seven-figure donation to the university (the others: $1 million to the College of Business Administration, $3 million to university hospitals and $1 million to endow the John and Mary Pappajohn Clinical Cancer Center.) John Pappajohn is a 1952 graduate of the university; ALSO--$500,000 to DRAKE UNIVERSITY (Iowa) for a business-development center; $1 million to IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY for a business-development center; $500,000 to NORTH IOWA AREA COMMUNITY COLLEGE for a business-development center; $1 million to the UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA for a business-development center. TOTAL: $4.5 million.

57. GEORGE CORNELL and HARRIET CORNELL--$1.5 million to the CORNELL FINE ARTS MUSEUM AT ROLLINS COLLEGE (Fla.). Cornell is a retired banker and 1935 graduate of the college.

58. DAVID D. (MICKEY) COLEMAN--$1.5 million pledge to the UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE AT MEMPHIS to endow a professorship in organ-transplantation research from this investment manager.

59. WILLIAM K. BREHM and ERNST VOLGENAU--$1.5 million pledge to the UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY (Md.) from the chairman and president, respectively, of SRA International, to endow a chair in ethics in the Department of Leadership, Ethics, and Law.

60. ROBERT DEDMAN--$1.5 million to the UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS to establish an endowed chair in club management. Dedman owns ClubCorp International, which specializes in resorts and golf courses. Dedman is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin.
