21. HARVEY "BUD" MEYERHOFF and LYN MEYERHOFF--$3 million pledge to JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY to support several parts of the university's $900 million fund-raising campaign. Meyerhoff is a Johns Hopkins trustee who previously established an endowed a professorship in Near Eastern Studies at the university as well as a cancer prevention center at the university's School of Public Health.

22. FRANCES WATT BAKER and LENOX BAKER JR.--$2.5 million to DAVIDSON COLLEGE (N.C.) in support of the departments of biology and psychology, the life sciences. The money will go toward the construction of the planned Watson Life Sciences building. Lenox Baker, a member of Davidson's Class of 1963, is a cardiothoracic surgeon in Norfolk, Va., and Frances Baker, like her mother before her, is a pediatrician. The Watt and Baker families have a long association with Davidson stretching back to 1897 when Frances Baker's father matriculated as a freshman in the Class of 1901. The entire life sciences complex will be named in honor of the Bakers' father, Dr. Lenox D. Baker, Sr. and Dr. James Watt.

23. IVAN GORR--$2.5 million to the UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO (Ohio) COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION from the retired president, chairman, and CEO of Cooper Tire and Rubber Co.

24. DAVID KOCH and BARBARA KOCH--$2.5 million to the UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS (Minn.) from the chairman of Graeco Inc. and his wife for a chair in Catholic Studies and scholarships for students majoring in Catholic Studies.

25. THE MORRIS WASSERSTEIN FAMILY--$2.3 million to the HARVARD LAW SCHOOL to create a professorship in the area of public-interest law. The grant is the third major gift the family has made to the Law School since 1990. This is the first chair in public interest at the law school. The Morris Wasserstein Public Interest Summer Fellowship Program was created in 1992. Wasserstein's son, Bruce Wasserstein, is an alumnus of the law school's class of 1970. One of Morris Wasserstein's daughters, Wendy Wasserstein, is the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning playwright.

26. EMERY STOOPS and JOYCE KING-STOOPS--$2.25 million to the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA for a professorship at the School of Education.

27. THOMAS E. SWIFT III and DOTTIE SWIFT--$2.2 million to the SHELTON SCHOOL AND EVALUATION CENTER from the owner of Swift Property Co., a real-estate investment firm, and his wife. The school serves learning-disabled students in the Dallas area. The gift, the largest in the school's 20-year history, will be used for a capital-expansion program, for scholarships, and to expand the school's use of computer and multimedia technologies. The Swifts have two children at the school, where Swift is a volunteer. Swift is a trustee and donor of the Louise T. Swift Foundation.

28. WARREN NELSON and PAT NELSON--$2.2 million to CARROLL COLLEGE (Mont.) from the co-owner of the Club Cal-Neva Casino and his wife, for unrestricted use.

29. ROBERT WEHR and JAMES R. WEHR--$2.1 million to SOUTHWEST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY to build a new hall for the marching band from the founder of Aaron's Automotive Products and his son, a real-estate investor.

30. EDWARD ARNOLD and SUZANNE ARNOLD--$2 million commitment to the UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME (Ind.) to endow the directorship of the university libraries from these Lebanon, Pa., residents. Arnold is chairman, president, and CEO of Arnold Industries and a 1961 Notre Dame graduate. The Arnolds have five children. A previous gift from the couple made possible the libraries' E.H. and Suzanne Family Endowment for Germanic Studies.
