Competitive Generosity 101
1. LILLIAN M. VERNON--$3.5 million to NEW YORK UNIVERSITY from the founder of the Lillian Vernon Corp., the mail-order catalogue company, to establish the Lillian Vernon Global Faculty Residence. ALSO--$1.5 million to New York University for a professorship for teachers in the College of Arts and Sciences. TOTAL: $5 million.
2. ELIZABETH B. LIND--a $4.75 million unrestricted gift to NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY (Ill.) for the dental school from the widow of Richard R. Lind, D.D.S., a 1932 graduate of the Dental School. The gift is one of the largest ever made to a dental school in the United States. Funds from the gift will be used to establish the Richard T. and Adam Lind Professor of Dentistry, the Dental School's first named professorship, and to support the daily operation of the school's clinical facilities. Lind noted that her husband's appreciation for his education was the impetus for making the gift. Richard T. Lind was a practicing dentist in Kankakee, Ill., for 43 years before retiring. He died in 1987.

3. LLOYD E. GOTSEN--$4.5 million to PRINCETON UNIVERSITY (N.J.).
4. WALTER RENK and MARTHA RENK, their son RICHARD, and their daughter-in-law SHARON--$4.1 million to the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT MADISON for agribusiness education, food safety, and cancer research. The gift will be shared by the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the School of Veterinary Medicine, and the Medical School. The Renk gift is the largest ever given to the College of Agriculture by an individual or family and is among the 10 largest ever received by the University of Wisconsin Foundation.
5. HELEN ROBSON WALTON--$4 million to the UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS for a professorship in finance.
6. FRANKIE HARRELL and STAN HARRELL--$4 million to METROPOLITAN MINISTRIES in Tampa, Fla., to help finance a major expansion of its facilities. The expansion, called Project Uplift, will provide a comprehensive care center for homeless and at-risk families and individuals. Harrell, a longtime supporter of Metropolitan Ministries, said the couple's gift already has spurred others to help the charity raise the $20 million it needs to pay for the project.
7. STEVEN HAZY and CHRISTINE HAZY--$3.5 million to DIXIE COLLEGE (Utah) for the School of Business.
8. YASUHISA TSUZUKI and KIMIKO TSUZUKI--$3.5 million pledge to HARVARD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION (Mass.), which will focus on early childhood development viewed from an international perspective and will support scholarship and research activities and travel grants. Yasuhisa Tsuzuki is president, and Kimiko Tsuzuki vice president, of the Tsuzuki Integrated Educational Institution in Japan, a group of schools founded 40 years ago by Yasuhisa Tsuzuki's parents.
9. STEVEN UDVAR-HAZY and CHRISTINE UDVAR-HAZY--$3.5 million to DIXIE COLLEGE (Utah) to construct the Erno and Etel Udvar-Hazy School of Business from this Hollywood, Calif., co-founder of International Lease Finance Corp. and his wife.
10. ROBERT J. VLASIC--$3.5 million to the UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN to endow the deanship of the College of Engineering.
