Other known gifts of over $1 million in 1996.

Competitive Generosity 101

41. KATHRYN W. DAVIS--$10 million to HARVARD UNIVERSITY to fund programs at the Kathryn & Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Russian Studies. Kathryn Davis is president of the Davis Family Foundation, and an alumna of Wellesley College (Mass.), where she and her husband made a major gift several years ago for the art museum.

42. FRANK ECK--$10 million to NOTRE DAME UNIVERSITY (Ind.) from the chairman and CEO of Advanced Drainage Systems for a new building to house a bookstore, alumni association, and visitors' center.

43. STEWART GREENEBAUM and MARLENE GREENEBAUM--$10 million to the UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND MEDICAL CENTER from the president of a commercial-real-estate development company and his wife. Marlene Greenebaum was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago, and is now in excellent health. When she was diagnosed, her husband said, "When she reaches the five-year mark--not if she reaches it--we are going to do something very significant." The gift will be used to support cancer research, experimental treatments, and a clinical facility for pediatric and adult oncology. The university will rename its cancer center after the Greenebaums later this year.

44. HERBERT IRVING--$10 million to COLUMBIA-PRESBYTERIAN MEDICAL CENTER (N.Y.) for cancer research. Irving is co-founder of Sysco Corp., the United States' largest food distributor.

45. LEONARD LAUDER--$10 million to the UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA for international studies from the president of the Estée Lauder Cos. The gift will support the Joseph H. Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies, which was established in 1983 by Lauder, his brother, Ronald, and their mother, Estée.

46. WILLIAM LAURIE--$10 million to the UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI for a new basketball arena from this former high-school basketball coach, who breeds and trains horses and is married to the daughter of Wal-Mart co-founder James "Bud" Walton. Laurie and his wife NANCY are both fans of college basketball, and became aware of the university's need for a new arena while traveling to "away" games and seeing the modern facilities on other campuses. Laurie's only stipulation on the gift is that students be better accommodated--that is, that they be given access to more and better seats.

47. WARREN V. (PETE) MUSSER--$10 million to LEHIGH UNIVERSITY (Pa.) for program support, the largest single donation ever to the university from an individual. Musser is chairman of the board, president, and CEO of Safeguard Scientifics in Wayne, Pa. He has committed $5 million to need-based financial aid for students, beginning with the class entering this fall; $3.5 million for the Musser Entrepreneurs Scholars Program; and $1.5 million as a challenge grant to complete fund raising for Taylor Gymnasium renovations.

48. LOIS POPE--$10 million to the MIAMI PROJECT TO CURE PARALYSIS (based at the UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI). This is the largest private gift to spinal-cord research on record. The gift will be paid over the next five years, and will endow 20 research fellowships. Pope is the widow of the founder of the National Enquirer.

49. ROY VAGELOS and DIANA VAGELOS--$10 million to the UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA for the Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. Roy Vagelos is chairman of the board of trustees of the university.

50. HENRY P. SLANE--$10 million to BRADLEY UNIVERSITY (Ill.) from the retired chief executive officer of the Peoria Journal Star. The gift will be used to support the university's communications and fine-arts college, as well as to endow a communications-technology fund, a professorship, and scholarships for financial aid. Slane is an alumnus of Yale University.
