The evidence on this point is scantier than I would like. There have been roughly a half-dozen studies of how estates are divided, and most have found that, at least in families with substantial assets, equal division is the rule. One study found an exception among lower-income families in Ohio, where there was a substantial number of unequal divisions. I have wondered whether this is because families at the lower end of the income scale invest more effort in convincing themselves that redistribution is a just process.
