Dear Zoë,

What I meant was that what I saw in her eyes--and slumping, depleted posture--was psychological desolation rather than evil. A jury will decide her fate, but should she be found guilty, I still think she should be spared the death penalty.



As I type, MSNBC is doing an exclusive interview with a mother who was booted for breastfeeding her baby at Kmart: "The woman told me to put my breast away." And deeper down the tubes cable news goes.
