The Breakfast Table

Complying With That Taskmaster, Political Correctness

Rhodeman,

Your parting e-mail and you bring up Hitler?! Talk about starting firestorms.

I have managed to get some work done around the edges of writing you all these e-mails. Both our summer research trips are booked. And I have tended to my clients. You often comment on the change in terminology among therapists. We do refer to people as “clients,” not “patients,” although people in hospitals are still referred to as patients. It’s a move in the psychology world to acknowledge that we don’t just treat people, we work with them. People participating in psychological research projects are no longer called “subjects,” they are now referred to as “participants.” The change in terms makes sense to me. Although I understand the arguments from those who disagree with the change. I don’t think it’s just complying with that taskmaster, political correctness. It does seem to reflect the nature of the partnership. I can’t make people change through any therapeutic technique. Only the strongest medications will change someone’s behavior, and that usually requires participation. We don’t tie (many) people down and force them to accept a psychotropic drug. Besides, the effectiveness of psychotropic drugs is yet another potential firestorm.

I wonder why the Cooper’s hawk was chasing the crow this morning? Had the crow tried to steal the hawk’s catch? Where were the crow’s pals? It was an amazing sight out the window.

Let’s keep in touch via e-mail more often. It’s fun getting notes from you.

red hot xo,
G
