The Breakfast Table

Pick Your Fights

“Watery sorta-Catholicism”? Yo, you’re missing something. I said I was raised Catholic. I am not Catholic. I subscribe to no religious affiliation. “Oh Lord, it’s this woman you gave me?” Yes. In conceding to some of my wife’s wishes, I do not claim to have been victimized. This is a matter of choice for which I am responsible. This is called picking your fights, OK? This is called compromise, getting along with someone you love.Your hissy fit proves my point. Ludicrous: the troubles I chiefly as a woman face. Well, you just might be more than a woman, you know, like a human being with all of the joys and sadnesses, triumphs and disasters that that implies. It is evasive and self-destructive (though sweetly complacent) always to focus only on what others are doing or have done to you? What about what you do or have done to others to their lack of amusement? All inhabitants of the empire of the victim are at heart self-hating misanthropes. I ain’t there, at least not yet.
