Marjorie,

I have to make this fast; busy day today.

I can't keep all these teen infanticide stories straight. Mostly, these kids are from New Jersey, right? That's about all I know. The details give me the creeps, so I tend not to read them. Larger question: Is there more of this going on than in years past, giving credence to the neocon theory that western civilization is collapsing because nobody has any values anymore? Or has it always been going on?

The rumor du jour on the New Yorker is Sonny Mehta, the president of Knopf. Question is whether Si Newhouse would really go with another Knopf editor, after losing faith in Tina's predecessor, Bob Gottleib (who, if you want my opinion, didn't do such a bad job).

Hurriedly,

Tim
