If what's happening in Asia is payback, it's cosmic payback for the way we've coddled China. It's shocking that even now so many are denying themselves the wisdom of 20/20 hindsight. The arms race in Asia, the CIA's blithe indifference notwithstanding, did not occur overnight. It is a direct consequence of the destabilizing effects of China's pursuit of ever-sexier weapons systems. China's behavior--aided and abetted by Bill Clinton, Trent Lott, Newt Gingich and all the other corporate lackeys--gave its neighbor, India, the jitters. India's own nuclear adventures then upset its neighbor, Pakistan. The domino theory, once discredited in nearby Southeast Asia, is back. Only this time, it's exploding dominoes instead of collapsing ones.

As for the CIA being caught dozing, although it's sort of nice knowing that the CIA is finding out things when we are--we no longer have that irritation of someone knowing a secret and not telling us--what are we paying them for? By the way, if you want the tax dollars you've invested in the CIA back from the government, by all means write your congressman. I think our intelligence services should come with at least as good a warranty as a Waring blender.
