Arianna Huffington and Harry Shearer
Hi Harry. I'm back in L.A., and just back in my office after a face-off with Dee Dee Myers moderated by Tony Danza at the Beverly Hills Hotel--at the end of which Roseanne, who happened to be having lunch at the hotel, stopped by. The conversation moved from the campaign fundraising mess to potty-training children--an easy transition.
As for "the magic of the marketplace", Alfred Marshall, the great 19th century economist, considered what he called "economic chivalry" essential to free enterprise. Indifference to any principle other than a free marketplace is the surest way to guarantee its extinction. Sorry for getting on my soapbox, but I spent three years at the Marshall Library at Cambridge studying the guy, and all the other free marketeers who understood that economic freedom could not flourish without a moral foundation. Tell that to all the corporate leaders who flocked to the White House East Room to kiss Jiang Zemin's ass during Clinton's State Dinner.
