Love online

Katha,

Yes, I couldn't agree more. And you should definitely try the chat-rooms. The guy I'm dating right now I met in a chat-room on America Online. I think the odds of our meeting without an Internet connection were virtually zero. But we did, and something clicked (not just the mouse), and he spent last weekend here (he's from Boston). I'm heading up there in couple of weeks, and we're planning to spend Memorial Day together in Provincetown. Altogether now: awww. The net is also, I think, a great boon to the most important relationship we have, which is friendship. I now keep in touch with many people I would otherwise never communicate with. With friends in England, it's particularly wonderful. I would also say I'm about 50 times more likely to answer an e-mail than a letter; and 20 times more likely to answer an e-mail than a phone call. I loathe the phone. I'm also on a list-server called Beyond Queer Friends, which is essentially a bunch of non-p.c. gay writers/thinkers/politicos, who provide sustenance for each other against the onslaught of leftist gay activism and rightist gay hostility. It's a real support group. God knows we need it.

So I'm thrilled you find something you like in the new global economy. And I thought I was the one who wanted to go back to the nineteenth century!

Have a great weekend.
Andrew
