Life Is Good

Dear Paula,

Well, I do think that the urban environment affects the quality of life. Densely populated neighborhoods, with homes, stores, and offices all mixed up, are more community-friendly than suburbs separated by strip-malls. (Actually I don't really like the idea of community. I just think old-fashioned neighborhoods are nicer places to live; better for my soul or something like that.) Jane Jacobs was right, and on this one point, I even agree with Al Gore. Shudder.

You really have gotten gloomy. Cheer up. As our friend Andrew always notes, "Life is good." What was it you said yesterday about pregnancy and hormones?
