When the sourdoughs returned, by different routes, they told conflicting stories. One claimed that the group had conquered not only the north but also the south peak (which, upon inspection from the north summit, turned out to be somewhat higher--contrary to what the view from the plains below would suggest). Initial euphoria turned to skepticism. But when a formal expedition did conquer the south peak a few years later, the members looked over and saw the pine pole and its tattered flag firmly implanted on the north summit. In more recent years, expeditions have been helicoptered to the base camp with supplies of freeze-dried food, state-of-the-art clothing and equipment, and pre-positioned caches. Fewer than half make it to the top.
