Early in the season, Bird left two players behind at the airport when they were a few minutes late for the Pacers' charter flight. Someone wrote to Ann Landers complaining that Bird was "mean." Ann took Bird's side: He "showed a great deal of courage when he left those late arrivals standing on the tarmac. He taught them a lesson they needed to learn. ... It was a demonstration of strong character. Way to go, Larry!"
