
Of the six books of which Gates is sole author, only two are works of original scholarship and neither of them was published in this decade: The Signifying Monkey (1988) is essentially a revision of his doctoral dissertation, and Figures in Black (1987) is a collection of essays. His rediscovery of Harriet Wilson's Our Nig (1859), the first African-American novel, came in 1983.
