For example, a corporation that employs slaves is very different from a corporation that practices racial discrimination (thereby refusing to hire the most qualified employees). The former increases profits by reducing the cost of labor, while the latter lowers profits by reducing the quality of labor. In the first case, the owners reap a benefit, while in the second case, the owners bear a cost. That difference substantially transforms the attendant moral and economic questions.
