Foxman is salty and blunt by nature, but as the Forward's Goldberg notes, the structure of the ADL liberates him. The ADL is effectively an independent organization. The B'nai B'rith, the Jewish service organization, nominally controls the ADL, but in reality the ADL board consists of Foxman allies. He has a fiefdom and thus freedom.
