Posted Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at 5:11 PM ETMarilyn Quayle recently visited New Hampshire to campaign for her husband and talk about education. Over the course of a three-day tour, the former second lady complained about school textbooks being dumbed down. "Janis Joplin should not get more play in a history book than George Washington," Mrs. Quayle said at one of her appearances, according to a report in the Concord Monitor. I called the Quayle command center a week ago to try to find out whether such a textbook actually exists--something I very seriously doubt. Communications director Jonathan Baron said he'd ask the candidate's wife where she got the example. That was a week ago …
