Posted Tuesday, July 29, 1997, at 4:48 PM ETVirginia Gov. George Allen asked his fellow Republicans to tone down their criticisms of President Clinton, who many GOPers believe has not been very supportive of William Weld's nomination for ambassador to Mexico.
"I think probably the best thing folks could do is cool down the rhetoric."
A year and a half ago, at GOP rally in Richmond, Allen offered this cool rhetoric to the party faithful: "Let's enjoy knocking [the Democrats'] soft teeth down their whiny throats."
