Poetry and music once were practically one and the same
From the most ancient times and (depending on where you are in the world) right up to modern times, poetry and music were not separate entities; in principle if not absolutely in all cases, all poetry of all genres was sung in public reading. You may recall that I work with an immense vocal score called the Hebrew Masoretic Text. Too long it has ...

()() "Gossamer" sung to "Bud Light...Real Men of Genius"
Blame it on industrial strength insomnia (which I always seem to get before a big trip -- I literally have had not a wink of sleep). Blame it on Artemesia's scathing review. Blame it on Angel's indifference (monumental yet transcendent, like the monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey). Blame it on MaryAnn's attempt to defend the poet and the poem. ...

Re: "These Are the Times into Which We Were Born" (new poem)
Dear C., A Spartan ambassador (or President Calvin Coolidge), were such a one inclined to writing haiku, might have said about as much in many fewer lines: It was cold and wet.A young Marine died of it.We found out too late. Next thing you know, some of us will start trying to prove that almost any modern poem sounds better when cast as a ...

New YouTube slideshow: Psalms 130
The Music of the Bible Revealed - Slideshow (Psalms 130) In keeping with the exquisite simplicity of the ''melopoesis'' of this Psalm as reconstructed by Suzanne Haik-Vantoura, my new YouTube slideshow uses very simple graphic and animation techniques. However, for NoStar's benefit (ask and you shall receive) and the benefit of those on YouTube ...

(שלום) The text is Psalms 113, BTW...
And here is the Greek Orthodox version (or one of them, if there's more than one) -- it is totally different in spirit from the reconstructed Hebrew version. The choirs are not quite in tune, even by what seems to be the singers' own native temperament (they're beautifully in tune in the upper registers, but have trouble in the lower ones). I ...

(שלום) My latest offering of Hebrew sung poetry...comments?
Ancient Hebrew sung poetry performed by the redoubtable Robert Boschiero (tenor) and Sabine Chefson (Celtic harp) on the recording La musique de la Bible revelee - Volume 3 by Suzanne Haik-Vantoura... This YouTube video slideshow is set apart by two things, one of which at least will be of interest and value to those of you who love poetry as ...

(שלום) New videos now available
As always, accessible from here. This weekend's selection of sung poetry includes Psalms 137, 47 (part), Numbers 6:22-27 (the Priestly Blessing -- my best slideshow video yet) and Exodus 20:2 (set apart by mediocre shofar playing, poor singing and bad lighting). wr ()()

Re: KG's and PB's contrarianism
Penne_Bolognese: Whenever I write something, I try to see if I can find the ''contrary'' interpretation to what everyone else believes. Otherwise, we are simply regurgitating the wornout and cliched ideas which have already been expressed so many times before. My thoughts here were inspired by the concepts expressed by Khalil Gibran and others ...
