Sophie Cabot Black's "Biopsy" as a limerick
Kudos to Robert Pinsky for this week's selection.Sophie Cabot Black's descriptions of the examination room and the demeanor of the ''People dressed in the exact clothing of each other'' is dehumanizingly spot on. ''Biopsy'' triggered many different memories for me: Taking my daughter to have a sliced thumb superglued and not stitched, learning ...

to MaryAnn, RE the PoBiz
I saw your post on blahblahblahblahblahblase's thread before it was torn down.I understand poets using Slate and other venues to sell books. I thought one of Pinsky's goals was to expand the horizons of poetry, poets, and poetry readers. Some one like Billy Collins gets more attention for having been a Poet Laureate in one month than lesser ...

Re: thursday OPP
Islandtime, I was struck by the beauty, how like a good sketch artist, a few strokes show so much.During my late evening call to my fiance, I read these to her. She had me read them again. It was an emotional day for me. These poems helped me deal with grief and I was motivated to write a poem of my own. I top posted it up above: Random Pencil ...

Thanks, Denny
Today I cleared the last of her belongings from her room. I found a pile of notes she had written to me (in addition to the notes in the drawer beside my bed), and writing that poem helped me deal with the grief that was stirred up.I doubt if it is great poetry, or even good, but it is honest. NS

One Poet Laureate...
Collins's ''The Symbol'' reads more like a prose fable than a poem. And why do the mirrors live unhappily ever after, besides that Collins tells us they do.One thing is for sure, a limerical treatment can't help but improve this stinker. There is a lot of potential symbolism here. Too bad Collins fumbled. Mirror breakage is said to cause seven ...

Re: Gimmericks and other irregularities
The perfect limerick is all anapestic. da da DUM da da DUM da da DUMda da DUM da da DUM da da DUMda da DUM da da DEEda da DUM da da DEEda da DUM da da DUM da da DUM So that means I was right the first time, in all but keeping Denny's rhyme of ''Maria'' and ''urea'' with ''dysuria''. Well, it was bound to happen: your description of the limerick ...

"Out House Story"...
''But Denny, editors are our FRIENDS...'' ;) I once knew a girl named MariaWho suffered a case of dysuria. There she'd sit on the potEvery chance that she got,And seek to discharge her urea. ------------------------------------------------------------- Well, maybe I can't think of a limerick defining a D-word just now, but my parody gene's been ...
