There is a great blog post about this phenomenon in Double D
by Cranky1000

Double Dragon is a game where there can be no friendly fire... until the last screen where its required.

There is no question about it, video games can bring out the inner jerkface in everyone.

I'm pretty sure you could knife your partner in DD.

The blog author writes a lot about how the story is dark, and "the game made me do it", but he doesn't acknowledge his truly asshole move: the surprise strike. The right thing to do, what my friends and I would do, is acknowledge that the other guy didn't realize what was going on, give him a free hit to even things up, then start when you're both ready. Yeah, the timer's going, so get your head in the game.

DD really needed a generic PvP mode. That would have been fun.
