The Screen Actors Guild Awards were held Sunday night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, where the all-female lineup of presenters handed out trophies for the best screen and television performances of the year, as chosen by fellow actors. Host Kristen Bell opened the ceremony with a dig at Melania Trump by announcing that, as first Lldy of SAG, she would be focusing on cyberbullying, then got on to more serious matters. Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell, fresh off their Golden Globe wins, both took home the trophies in their respective categories for their work in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and the entire cast of the film won Outstanding Performance by a Cast, just as the film itself won Best Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes. That makes Three Billboards the film to beat headed into the Academy Awards. Similarly, Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour) and Allison Janney (I, Tonya) repeated their Golden Globe wins, giving them plenty of momentum as awards season continues. Morgan Freeman received a lifetime achievement award for his decades of memorable performances.

In television, Nicole Kidman (Big Little Lies) and Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) also pulled off the Golden Globe/SAG double hitter. Brown became the first black actor to win the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series category. Alexander Skarsgård gave the most charmingly self-deprecating speech of the night, after winning for his performance in Big Little Lies in a category that included Robert De Niro:

A lot of people have been talking about who the greatest male actor ever is. Is it Mr. Robert De Niro? Or the tall dude from True Blood? The thespians have spoken—thank you very much for that.

Meanwhile, Aziz Ansari, who won a Golden Globe for Master of None, and James Franco, Golden Globe winner for The Disaster Artist, both went home empty-handed. Oldman won Franco’s category (the two were in different categories at the Globes) and William H. Macy (Shameless) won in Ansari’s. Both Franco and Ansari have faced accusations of sexual misconduct since the Golden Globes just two weeks ago. The Academy Awards are still more than a month away—who knows will have disgraced themselves by then?
