In Means of Ascent, Caro persuasively proves that LBJ stole the 1948 Senate election. The book’s deep flaw is that Caro goes much further and portrays the election’s real winner, Coke Stevenson, as a folk hero, when all the evidence suggests he was a segregationist and near fascist. Sidney Blumenthal wrote the seminal (really, a blistering) critique of this book in the June 4, 1990, issue of The New Republic. It doesn’t appear to be online, but here is a reply that Blumenthal wrote to Caro’s critique of his review in the New York Times.
