This week in Slate , Dan Kois sang the praises of Broadcast News , calling the 1987 film—just out in a new editionfrom Criterion —"the smartest romantic comedy of the past 25 years."

Not everyone on Twitter agreed with his selection: When @Slate asked readers to weigh in usingthe #SmartRomCom hashtag, we got dozens of alternate nominations, ranging from the classic ( When Harry Met Sally ) to theintriguingly left-field ( Wall-E ) andon through the facetious ( Alien vs.Predator —or should that be Alien ?sPredator ?)

Kois chose 15 finalists from the pool, using the followingmethodology:

It had to be a romantic comedy,primarily. That is, if you can make an argument that it's primarily or evenequally something else, then — nomatter how good it is — I cut it.That's why there's no Shaun of the Dead (zombie movie), Wall-E (sci-fiadventure), Out of Sight (cops 'n'robbers drama), or The Princess Bride (fairy tale deconstruction), as good as they are. Most painfully, that's whythere's no Eternal Sunshine of theSpotless Mind — I can'tmake the argument it's primarily a romantic comedy. Not romantic enough, tootragic. And it was my third-favoritemovie of the 2000s!

After that, I just picked movies I loved and/or that had mammoth readersupport.
