Surprise! Fox News Says No to Pink Toenails for Boys

Who doesn’t love it when Fox plays to its own stereotype? J.Crew sent around an online ad called “Saturday with Jenna” that included an image of Lyons paining her 7-year-old son Beckett’s toenails with her favorite Essie hot pink above the caption “Lucky for me I ended up with a boy whose favorite color is pink. Toenail painting is way more fun in neon.”

And Fox Health columnist Dr. Keith Ablow was off and running.

Yeah, well, it may be fun and games now, Jenna, but at least put some money aside for psychotherapy for the kid-and maybe a little for others who’ll be affected by your ‘innocent’ pleasure. This is a dramatic example of the way that our culture is being encouraged to abandon all trappings of gender identify-homongenizing males and females when the outcome of such “psychological sterilization” [my word choice] [by which-this is your XXFactor blogger talking here-Dr. Ablow means his word choice, although his punctuation choices go unexplained] is not known [italics mine ].

J.Crew has endorsed pink toenail polish for little boys! Imagine those possible outcomes! Human sacrifice. … Dogs and cats, living together. … Mass hysteria! Or, as Dr. Ablow goes on to suggest, “crowd[ed] operating rooms with procedures to grotesquely amputate body parts.”

Fox News then quoted someone from the neutrally named but deeply conservative “Media Research Center” agreeing with Ablow and calling the picture “blatant propaganda celebrating transgendered children.” But Fox did, of course, add an alternative point of view. Of course they did! They’re a news organization, after all. Jo B. Paoletti, author of Pink and Blue: Telling the Girls From the Boys in America , gently suggested that Dr. Ablow might be, um, overreacting.

You think?
