Breaking news, via Twitter: A peaceful demonstration in Egypt’s Tahrir Square, reportedly for women’s rights and secularism , has been interrupted by men who are harassing female protesters. Journalist Ethar El-Katatney was at the demonstration, and she was live Tweeting : “Was just ranted at by a ‘sheikh’ telling me to go home and raise my kids,” followed by “Aaaand we just got harassed. Time to go home. More disappointed than I could have possibly imagined.”
This is such a shame, especially since-as Sarah Topol wrote in a piece for Slate last month -harassment was at an all-time low during the protests that brought down President Hosni Mubarak. Let’s hope today’s demonstrators can get home safe.
