Long-Form Ladies

We published a lot here on DoubleX on the recent VIDA study that found  women writers don’t show up as often in the pages of “thought leader” publications . I read it all eagerly-I’m a female writer, after all-but it left me wishing the conversation had involved more concrete steps and less general, protracted hand-wringing. To that end, Ann Friedman, formerly deputy editor of the American Prospect and a newly minted freelance writer , has started a Tumblr to collect the best nonfiction writing from female writers , a sort of women-only longform.org .  Ann argues that existing long-form aggregators tend to collect mostly the best of the thought-leader pubs-which, as VIDA showed, tend both toward the mostly male and the already-established writer. So as a magazine junkie, I’ll be reading it to find great writing I might have overlooked otherwise, and I hope editors looking for fresh voices will check the site as well.
