Why Girls Love Unicorns: Redux

In 2009, I wrote an article for DoubleX on a topic near and dear to my heart: unicorns. Specfically, the long and fascinating history of their association with human females.

A few months ago, I got a call from radio production team the Kitchen Sisters , asking me to participate in an episode of their great new series, The Hidden World of Girls . Past episodes have covered everything from lesbians in Pakistan and pop stars’ alter egos to girls who hunt and transgender politicians.

Yesterday, their piece on why girls love horses, unicorns and dolphins-featuring yours truly- aired on All Things Considered . Peggy Orenstein, who spoke with DoubleX a few weeks ago about her new book on girl culture, joined in as well. I especially loved hearing the voices of actual girls in this piece-particularly the one who recommends the TV show Flipper.

Give it a listen, and let us know: Were you into unicorns as a kid? Or did their sparkliness never speak to you?
