Emily Bazelon on Phoebe Prince Suicide: Not a Black-and-White Narrative

If you haven’t read Emily Bazelon’s fantastic, deeply reported investigation into the suicide of Phoebe Prince, click here to read the three-part series . Up until now, the media narrative about Phoebe told the story of an Irish girl who was bullied to death at South Hadley High School in Massachusetts. Six South Hadley teenagers were charged with serious crimes for Phoebe’s suicide, but Emily has shown that Phoebe’s psychological troubles predated her arrival in the United States. She had been cutting herself while in school in Ireland, and she had one unsuccessful suicide attempt before her death. Emily also shows that the district attorney who charged the six teenagers in Phoebe’s case has a history of questionable decisions. Emily appeared on the Today Show this morning to talk about her piece; video is embedded below.
