Kim Cattrall Refuses To Be Cougar-fied, Loses Magazine Cover

Kim Cattrall gets lumped in with her Sex and the City character Samantha Jones quite a bit. For a few reasons-Samantha single-handedly brought back Cattrall’s career, and it just so happens that the actress, author of Satisfaction: The Art of the Female Orgasm , is a powerful middle-aged woman who, gasp , enjoys sex.

Apparently this similarity was enough to prompt a yet-to-be-disclosed “a significant magazine for women over 40” to put Cattrall on the cover with a cougar. And when the actress protested the offensiveness of the photo, the magazine decided to pull Cattrall from the cover altogether. As she told Extra :”I really take umbrage to the code ‘cougar,’ ” Cattrall says. “I think cougar has a negative connotation, and I don’t see anything negative about Samantha [her ‘SATC’ character] and her sexuality, sensuality, and choice. … I don’t think she stands or sits in bars waiting for young men to prey on,” Cattrall adds. “And I think that’s something that people who are uncomfortable with strong women have labeled her.”

Jezebel has an excellent odds breakdown as to which “significant magazine for women over 40” (as you can imagine, there are not that many of them) was so stupid as to lose a Kim Cattrall cover shot right as SATC 2 hits theaters. The actress has nothing to lose for expressing her umbrage, and only admiration to gain. Now if only the Sex and the City writers would stop penning Samantha as a walking stereotype and allow her to be as discerning and dimensional as the actress who plays her.
