Courtney Love Propels Dumb Frat-Boy Myth

There’s been something utterly heart-breaking about Courtney Love’s recent streak of Tourette’s-like outbursts on the airwaves lately. Maybe because it’s just so hard to reconcile the woman who bestowed upon us the great 1998 album Celebrity Skin with the one staggering onto talk shows and spewing words that amount to “SEX! LOOK (SEX!) AT ME! I’M SEXY! SEX! SEX! SEXY,” like an attention succubus has eaten her soul. Last week, Love took to Howard Stern and nonchalantly reopened old wounds, dropping that she had an affair with Gavin Rossdale during his courtship with Gwen Stefani . Then yesterday, she put her star power behind one of the oldest frat-tropes in the book : Ugly girls are better in bed because they try harder . In Love’s words:

I’m better because I was never pretty. Pretty girls just lie there. Us girls who grew up a little more homely have to try a lot harder. That’s why pretty girls never threaten me, it’s like, yeah, you want to take me on? Take me on. Go for it.

Of course, the misogynist pretty-girls-lie/ugly-girls-try theory assumes that women in both camps are opening their legs mainly for enjoyment on the part of men. Pretty girls can be boring because they’re easily objectified, while ugly girls have to prove themselves worthy of getting laid. Always glad to hear sex is just another lil’ old way for us ladies to compete against one another.
