Sandra Bullock Takes Control of the Tabloid Narrative

Up until now, Sandra Bullock has barely responded to all the stories about her philandering husband, Jesse James, in the press. She refused to get publicly involved in James’s sordid affairs, other than to deny that there was a Nazi-tinged sex tape of her . Today, People magazine released a preview of their cover story on Bullock, slated for Friday, in which she discusses adopting a baby boy who was born in New Orleans and filing for divorce in one swift motion.

Though this adoption must have been in the works since before the gross revelations about James’ character, Bullock’s dissemination of the information is masterful. She stayed out of the muck of his affairs with tattooed white-power enthusiasts and has changed the narrative about herself from wronged wife to competent, happy, new adoptive mom. Of the divorce, she simply tells people, ” I’m sad and I am scared .” But she kvells when talking about her new son, Louis: “He’s just perfect, I can’t even describe him any other way. … It’s like he’s always been a part of our lives.” That Sandra is one smart cookie.
