The Buddhist Christian on the Trail

MT. PLEASANT, S.C.—My longish take on Mark Sanford’s leave-no-hand-un-shook campaign is up now, reported from the American Idol party in Beaufort to the sprawl of North Charleston. Sanford’s strategy: Do at least 10 campaign stops per day in the final stretch, talk to everyone, and small-talk even those whose occupations are mysterious.

My friend Chris Moody, who shares my ocular focus on weirdness, reported from a few different hours on the Sanford trail. Recaps include his conversation with the candidate about Buddhism (“What I do like about Buddhism is the idea of being present”) and Sanford’s encounter with a neighbor who keeps Colbert Busch signs on her yard and really, really doesn’t need the governor schmoozing her.
