The man who brought you the Daily Caller and the Rick Santorum presidential campaign emails his readers—people who signed up at his punditry site—and explains why South Carolinians need to vote Sanford. I clicked because Santorum himself was the only sort-of-national Republican figure who jetted down during the primaries to campaign for a Sanford opponent. I was a little surprised by the argument, though.
The Democrats’ main case against Mark Sanford is he cannot be trusted because he has gone through a divorce and is remarrying. Ironically, Colbert, according to Erick Erickson of Red State, also divorced and even was arrested during the course of those proceedings for contempt of court charges.
That’s not really the argument, but maybe this desmonstrates just how Sanford has neutered the story through repetition and apology. The argument is: Hey, Sanford left the country without telling anyone (saying instead that he was “hiking the Appalachian trail”), then came clean about an affair, then was censured because some state funds had paid for his Argentina jaunt. Colbert Busch’s divorce was ugly, but she’s said so—the release of her mugshot from a spat during the divorce hasn’t really hurt her at all.
In other news that probably matters more, the Charleston Post and Courier, available through most of the district, has endorsed the Democrat as a qualified alternative to “Sanford fatigue.”
