Stop Acting Like ProgressKY Has Any Real Power

Senate Minority Leader Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and his wife Elaine L. Chao arrive at the White House June 7, 2011 in Washington, DC for a state dinner being held for German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

ProgressKentucky, a group purpotedly trying to primary Sen. Mitch McConnell in 2014, has been getting flak today for writing racist tweets about McConnell’s wife, former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao.

But if you look on OpenSecrets, it looks like ProgressKY has raised $0 this year. And while that may actually be the case, further digging shows that they—whoops!—neglected to report their finances to the FEC this year. The only reason this story is getting any attention is because ProgressKY is a “super PAC”—you know, one of those evil, powerful super PACs that doesn’t even have the wherewithal to file their FEC reports on time.

The reaction to this non-story is the equivalent of liberals demanding that Republicans disavow a statement made by some random Tea Party group they’ve never heard of.
