At least five people – three in North Carolina, one in Indiana and one in Ohio – were injured after weapons went off at gun shows Saturday, officials said… the most casualties came at the Dixie Gun and Knife Show in Raleigh, North Carolina, where attendees bolted – with at least one woman wiping out in the frenetic scene – when gunfire rang out around 1 p.m.
Read on and you see that the accidents were totally unordinary. This stuff happens, sometimes, when people are handling a lot of old weapons very quickly. But we don’t often hear about it, because there’s no group yammering to the media that it should cover a national day of gun appreciation. And this is a common theme in the current gun debate: Second Amendment defenders haven’t sweated legislation for years, and are responding to the threat with maximum sloppiness. The bang-on best example of this is the NRA’s “armed guards for Obama’s kids” ad, which based the claim that Sidwell Friends has “11 armed guards” on a couple of unconfimed blog items about how the school has a decent-sized security staff.
