Poll: Voters Thinking Hard About Medicare, Scared of Vouchers

There’s plenty of modestly good news for Republicans in the new Quinnipiac/CBS/NYT poll of swing states. The most delicious? Probably that more voters trust Paul Ryan to take over the presidency than trust Joe Biden. (Biden makes gaffes, you know!) And then there’s this.
Screen shot 2012-08-23 at 10.44.28 AM It’s so hard to get a solid poll on opinion of the “Ryan plan.” People generically like the idea of a reform that doesn’t touch their Medicare, and they generally like Ryan, so he’s been able to pretend his plan is painless for “current retirees.” But Democrats still hold that advantage on the details. And this is even more interesting:
Screen shot 2012-08-23 at 10.43.24 AM So, in Florida, 50 percent of people say Medicare will be extremely important when they vote. Sadly, there’s no previous question to compare this to. We don’t know how many Republicans say Medicare will be very important because, hey, they like Ryan. But for comparison, the “extremely” important numbers for other issues – the deficit (47), foreign policy (31), the housing market (22). This is what Democrats wanted, right?
