The problem: Former Sen. Mike DeWine, now Ohio’s attorney general, switches from a Mitt Romney endorser to a Rick Santorum endorser. The additional problem: DeWine will endorse Santorum at 2 p.m. CT on a holiday weekend (President’s Day is a holiday, really), sucking up the news cycle like some pro-life anteater.
The solution: Schedule a press call with John Sununu, the former governor of New Hampshire, speaking as the lead surrogate. For a call about Ohio. Reporters from Politico and the Weekly Standard, respectively, tweet about how it worked.
The media loves violent rhetoric (hello, Sarah Palin!), and so this washes over the message that the campaign had meant to push: DeWine backed Santorum because the two of them are squishy defenders of restoring felon voting rights.
