John McCain Versus Debates

ORLANDO, Fla. – John McCain was not just Mitt Romney’s warm-up act tonight. He was the warm-up for Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortuno, a new Romney endorser, whose arrival heralded the use of new hype-em-up campaign music.

“I’m the lounge act,” he said. He proceeded to tell every joke he’s ever told, from “I slept like a baby – sleep two hours, wake up and cry.” After this, and after praising Romney for a “knock out” debate, he wanted to go off message.

“It’s time we stop the debates. Enough. We’ve had 19 of them.”

Funny thing: The next debate, a hard-won bargain for a state that wanted an earlier primary, is in McCain’s own Arizona.
