TUCSON, AZ - JANUARY 8: U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) (C) greets guest at the ‘Remembering January 8th Candlelight Vigil’ held at the University of Arizona Mall January 8, 2012 in Tucson, Arizona. The event was the culmination of several days commemorating the one year anniversary of a shooting rampage that killed six people and wounded more than a dozen more. Some weekend reading, on your way to… whatever it is people go to on MLK Day weekend, is up now over at the home page. I review Tom Zoellner’s flawed but worthwhile book A Safeway in Arizona: What the Gabrielle Giffords Shooting Tells Us About the Grand Canyon State and Life in America. It’s an odd casserole of a book, reeling from a truly painful (in the best way) recollection of the massacre to a Holden Caulfield story about the author himself (a bit like Into the Wild, now that I think on it), and into magazine article-style chapters on the things that ruin the country.
