The Day Santorum and Clinton Teamed Up

TILTON, N.H. – On the trail here, Rick Santorum keeps referring to a Social Security forum he attended with Bill Clinton. It was in April 1998, marking his “only flight on Air Force One.” It was bold. It fell apart after “Monica Lewinsky’s dress popped up.”

C-Span has the video, and the Santorum part starts at 39:00 or so.

I don’t think there’s much here for the oppo reseacher. For the history buff, there’s plenty. Hey, it’s Sen. Bob Kerry, to whom the expression “Santorum is Latin for ‘asshole’” is credited, side by side with the proverbial Santorum. We have Santorum calling for private accounts while adding that “there needs to continue to be a guaranteed benefit for people who are disabled, or people who are survivors.”

Quite the flashback. Months later, Santorum and other conservatives were embroiled in the impeachment of the president. Santorum himself voted to remove Clinton from office. Neither man talks about that on the campaign trail, preferring to talk about all the bipartisan achievements they had. But the pivot from “hey, let’s use this surplus and economic boom to do big things” to “what’s up with Clinton’s penis” is one of the great blunders of modern American history.
