The Day They Occupied the Ports

My new piece from last night is sort of a review of the year of Occupying, from the Wisconsin camp-out in the Capitol to yesterday’s Occupy the Ports protests. I see that the coverage of that action today is fairly muted, with no real estimate of how much commerce was stopped by protests that weren’t actually big enough to grind down all economic activity. (The Los Angeles/Long Beach port is more than 30 miles long.) And while I talked to labor leaders who were annoyed, I thought the comments of the SEIU’s Stephen Lerner were interesting: He argued that Occupiers could basically raise more hell than labor could, which would create more angst for the elites.
